December '05 REVIEW of FIVE WORLDWIDE

The Sunpost, Vol. XX No. 49

Valient Effort

by Jarrod Dean-Miller

Published: Thursday, December 15th, 2005

Artist:   Al Valient      Album:  Five WorldWide EP (FNOM Recordings)

Known for his weekly appearance on the local internet broadcast Krib TV (FNOM Worldwide), Miami’s Al Valient, aka DJ Vee, is a veteran on the turntables.  He gains inspiration from rock, hip-hop and downtempo music, to create a world of his own.  Whether you like rhyming or instrumentals, his new EP, Five WorldWide, delivers.  Tracks like “Driven” are laid back and encompass a “lounge vibe.”  Others, like “Put My Shh…,” are more upbeat with a funk vibe.

Valient showed true wizardry by creating and mastering the EP on the Akai MPC 2000 sound station.  The classic machine has been used by hip-hop and other genres of producers for years.  Valient brings to the technology a little modern ingenuity and a vast collection of vinyl.

Five WorldWide features lyrical appearances by international emcees Pete Philly of Amsterdam and Indio of Germany.  Valient Makes everal appearances rhyming on the album as well.

Al Valient drops cuts on Krib TV Saturdays at 7 p.m.  For more information on Al Valient and other FNOM Recordings artists, visit www.FNOMrecordings.com.

LATEST REVIEW of FIVE WORLDWIDE

New Times BPB - Subtropical Spin

Five Worldwide (FNOM Recordings) by Jonathan Zwickel

Published: Thursday, July 28, 2005

Tiptoeing along with cinematic flourish and blunted swagger, Al Valient's debut EP is smart, subtle, and shifty. A native of El Salvador, Valient is something of a nomadic producer who's worked in Germany and Central America but currently calls Miami home. For the past couple of years, he's been a fixture of Internet radio stations the Womb and the Krib, where his mixing skills were flaunted online way before they were on wax. Five Worldwide is his official coming-out on local label FNOM.

The album's five tracks span a range of styles, showing Valient's versatility behind the MPC 2000, the digital sampler/sequencer that's his sole music-making machine. Low-key instrumentals like "Most They Fall" and "Driven" pulse with looming drama, sonic snapshots that yield overall sensations of color and vibe and more than head-noddable hooks. Dutch MC Pete Philly weighs in with infectious bombast on "Put My Shhh..." in Five's most bump-friendly track, his accented rasp falling somewhere between Method Man and Lyrics Born. The other vocal track, "Sounds n' Stylz," is a midtempo battle number skipping on a funky guitar line and crackling break. The album's bonus track (I guess Six Worldwide didn't sound right) is also a highlight, a pass-the-mic session done over elegant piano samples, recorded live in a Hamburg studio. If there's a language barrier here, it's trampled by a bevy of witty MCs that come out swinging in English and Spanish, the perfect mirror to Valient's own international ethos. [more]

Live In Store Performance of “Five WorldWide” @ Uncle Sam's Music

Check out VALIENT’s turntable skills and catch a live MPC performance of his EP for FREE this Saturday, July 30th from 3 – 4 PM at UNCLE SAM'S  Fort Lauderdale record store!  4580 N. University Drive, Ft. Laud. 33351 - (954) 742-2466. KRIB.TV will also be filming for a global broadcast!

AL VALIENT of FNOM Recordings, perceived as one of the most promising up and coming producers in the music industry, is often compared to MPC 2000 enthusiasts Prefuse 73 and DJ Shadow for his choppy and innovative production style. VALIENT recently released his premier EP “Five WorldWide”, blessed on the BBC and currently infecting college radio stations.

The EP, skillfully crafted on an MPC 2000, is truly WorldWide as the album was conceptualized in Central America, recorded in Europe and manufactured in the US.  International artists like Pete Philly (Epitaph Europe) from Amsterdam and Indio from Germany met up with VALIENT in Hamburg, Germany to lace the tracks.
